Baby Nursery: Moroccan Adventure

I was never the kind of mom to carry a puffy pastel diaper bag, and my son and I shared a studio for the first three years of his life. The poor child never had a nursery; or rather—poor me—I never had a chance to decorate one! If a genie granted me a do-over…I would round up treasures from faraway lands, with heavy emphasis on Morocco. My aim would be to create a spirit of adventure, complete with dashes of whimsy and elements of hominess to make the little one feel welcome.

Check out the ten items in my dream nursery; then browse the others in our series: an all-orange nursery (it's the new baby neutral), a nursery inspired mid-century modern art, a nursery with an animal kingdom theme, and another with a French country look.

1.  Pottery Barn Ribbon Drapes (sold for, $121.75): A crisp, dramatic frame for the room’s colors and textures. 2. Moroccan Dresser Inlaid with Mother of Pearl (buy it now price, $3500): More elegant than rustic, this embellished dresser is a great investment and will work in almost any room.

3. Large African Hand-Woven Zulu Basket A lidded “snake charmer “ basket  is a great hiding place for blocks,  sports equipment, or the occasional (small) kid playing hide and seek. 4. Moroccan Leather Pouf (buy it now price, $70): A metallic pouf is chic enough for a grown-up and the right height for a kid.

5. Antique Turkish Baby Basket/Crib/Swing (buy it now price, $349.99): Tribal nomads have rocked their infants in cribs like this for centuries. I would securely hang this from the ceiling next to my bed (instead of a bassinette) and use it later to corral the stuffed animal collection. 6. Early French Day Bed (buy it now price, $1750.00) A daybed for night feedings can be transformed into a toddler bed soon enough. It’s low to the ground and when the velvet becomes too precious, it can be slip-covered or reupholstered.

7. Organic Moroccan Atlas Rug (buy it now price, $299) “From the Atlas Mountains to the floor of Baby’s Room” would be a great opening line for bedtime stories. 8. Vintage Set of Four Silhouettes (current bid, $36)  If I could get my son to sit still, I would cut out my own keepsakes (or get them done by a pro) and put them in these lovely old frames.

9. Baby Blanket (buy it now price, $29.99): This blanket looks antique, but it's actually brand new. It can be custom made in your choice of colors.  10. Vintage 1940s Replogle 10” Light Up Glass World Globe (buy it now price, $225) A vintage globe does double duty as a nightlight.
