Accessories Report: Feeling Jaded

Jade, a gemstone most commonly found in shades of green, can be traced back to ancient China. As far back as 5000 BC, it was used in functional items like knives and weapons, for ceremonial use in royal burials and in ornamental pieces. Jade was even referred to as “The Stone of Heaven” because it was thought of as a link between the physical and spiritual worlds. Today, many people wear jade jewelry for good luck.

Leave it to the iconic design house of Chanel to make jade relevant again: For Fall ’09, Karl Lagerfeld took that very same shade of green and incorporated into the entire collection—from jewelry, belt buckles and jade colored suits to the highly in-demand limited edition nail color.

The Le Vernis Nail Color in Jade sold out in weeks pretty much everywhere, but you can search on eBay and place your bids for a bottle of your very own. If you like the shade and the idea of wearing green on your fingers but are interested in a more affordable price tag (we’ve seen bids for the Chanel as high as $76), you can find other brands that fit the bill. OPI’s minty “Go on Green” is closest to the Chanel tint, but we also like sparkly Maybelline Express Finish in Jade Flash (buy it now price. $5.99), OPI’s yellowish Gargantuan Green Grape (buy it now price, $4.99) and grass greenn Green-wich Village  (buy it now price, $5.45).

Chanel Go On Green Nail Color (buy it now price, $4.75)

Green nails are not for everyone. Why not wear jade the way the fashion gods intended it—through jewelry? Follow Chanel’s lead by starting with black and white outfits and adding jade accents. Models piled on the rings at Chanel, wearing up to three large styles on one hand. Get the look with one chic gold and jade cocktail ring  (buy it now price $118.99) or try a rougher cut stone:

All Stone Ring (buy it now price, $118.15)

Necklaces on the runway were oversize circular pendants. This one is strung from jade and rose quartz beads.

Vintage Jade & Rose Quartz Bead Necklace (buy it now price, $45)

Bracelets were oversize cuffs worn over frilly sleeves. This one is equally statement-making—and only $8!

Cuff Bracelet (buy it now price, $8)

To add a pop of color at your waist, take any old leather belt from your closet and add a jade buckle like this vintage Japanese fastener.

Jade Garden Green Celluloid Belt Buckle (buy it now price, $35)

Finally, if you are having a DIY moment and want to brush up on your sewing skills, change up boring buttons to ones in the shade of the moment like these antique opal buttons (buy it now price, $10).
