5 Accessories Trends for 2010

Who wants to start wearing spring fashion trends (like bloomers, floaty floral dresses and lingerie-inspired pieces) in this freezing weather, much less shop for them? For folks who want a jump start on spring, the easiest place to begin is with accessories. Before you break out the plastic, here are five key trends along with our ideas on how to incorporate them into your closet.

LUCITE

Lucite accessories were a "clear" winner at the Spring fashion runways: Fendi showed icy lucite box clutches (below, left), platform wedges and hardware, while Prada sent down chunky heels and smoky frame bags and totes. Lucite is one of those materials that walks a fine line between stripper and style maven, so rather than go for clear shoes and bags, try a lucite jewelry, like the necklace at Michael Kors (below, right)

Try the Trend (28,000 Lucite Accessories on eBay):

Lucite Bracelet (buy it now price, $148.75; above, center) A little more interesting than a traditional bangle bracelet, make this your only accessory. It will look great at the beach with your bikini and sarong.

Vintage Lucite Bead Necklace (buy it now price, $12.99) Pair this piece with a bright dress (for summer or winter)—it's very Mrs. Roper.

BELT BAGS

They're called "belt bags" today, but you may recognize them as a blast from the 80's past. As we've previously reported, the fanny pack seems to be back. This accessory got a bad rap from tourists, who paired it with jogging suits and ill-fitting shorts for sightseeing sojourns. But when worn correctly, the belt bag’s reputation can be redeemed. Louis Vuitton, who showed a logo version (below, center) and Jonathan Saunders, who showed one in leather, have set out to prove that the fanny pack can be both sleek and chic. Give it a chance with these updated versions.

Chanel Quilted Leather Belt Bag (buy it now price, $1875; above, left) A classic quilted leather belt bag from Chanel (in any shape) is sure to get you fashion points.

Embossed Leather Belt Bag (buy it now price, $14.50; above, right) A small embossed croco print version pairs fashion with function.

DRAWSTRING LEATHER BAGS

The drawstring leather bag, like the one seen at Luella (below, center) is soft, slouchy and easy to wear. Because the shape is so forgiving, you can put in as much or as little as the bag allows; just tighten or loosen the drawstring and the silhouette will stay the same. Long straps allow this bag style to be worn across the body as well as on the shoulder.

Try the Trend (1400 Drawstring Bags on eBay)

Leather Drawstring Bag (buy it now price, $9.99; above, left) The neutral shade works in winter or spring, and the ruching along the bottom adds interesting detail.

Snakeskin Leather Drawstring Pouch Bag (buy it now price, $37.95; above, right)  Brown snakeskin adds a vintage feel to this version.

T-STRAP SHOES

Just ask Giambattista Valli (below, left): It goes without saying that t-straps are a much more polished choice than casual flat sandals and flip-flips for spring. As the weather transitions, take a cue from Ralph Lauren (below, right) and try them with cuffed jeans. In the meantime, while it's still freezing out, the fashion bold can wear the style now with sandalfoot opaque black tights.

Peep-Toe T-straps (buy it now price, $13.99) This red patent pair is begging to be taken for a night on the town. red patent leather t-straps are great for a night on the town.

Satin Peep-Toe T-straps (buy it now price, $99.99)

BROOCHES AND PINS

They're not your grandmother’s accessory anymore. This Spring, brooches and pins took center stage. From tongue-in-cheek styles as seen at Miu Miu, Zac Posen (below, left) and John Galliano, who even showed them with price tags, to more feminine options at Nina Ricci (below, right), any style you choose will be on track. Forget blouses with brooches pinned at the neck; they're way too stuffy. Brooches today look modern and fresh when worn on slouchy tees or blazers.

Try the Trend: (133,000 brooches on eBay)

Enamel Brooch (buy it now price, $12.25) Almost like a boutonnière, but much cooler, this red carnation brooch will add a pop of color to your outfit.

Enamel Bar Brooch (buy it now price, $74.99) Such an out-of-the-ordinary shape for a brooch: the dark hue makes the art deco style that much more unusual.
